Sky over Idaho Falls.

How this works

An antenna in Idaho Falls listens to the position reports that aircraft broadcast as they fly, called Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast. It keeps one position for every aircraft it hears, every 15 seconds.

Each morning at 5 AM Mountain time, the day before becomes a poster. It draws every aircraft below 15,000 feet within 28 km (17 miles) of Idaho Falls Regional Airport.

Reading a poster

Gold lines are low, such as takeoffs, landings and the pattern around the runway.

Blue lines are higher, such as arrivals on their way down and traffic passing through.

The grey lines underneath are the city's streets.

What you won't see

No tail numbers, flight numbers or owners. The posters show where aircraft flew, not who they were.

Gaps

If the receiver misses part of a day, that day's page says how many half hours it heard.
